Deriv review: mobile money deposits, Derived Indices and platforms
This Deriv review matters to African traders for one reason above all: mobile money. Its payment table lists M-Pesa, MTN, Airtel, Vodafone and Orange Money, many from USD 5, with instant deposits. The group has run since 1999 and offers synthetic Derived Indices around the clock, while its licences all come from offshore regulators.
Updated . Checked against the broker's own pages, regulator registers and published reviews.
Deriv M-Pesa, MTN and mobile money limits
Deriv's payment table is its strongest feature for traders in Africa. M-Pesa runs from USD 5 to USD 1,000 per transaction, with instant deposits and instant withdrawals. See the Deriv minimum deposit page for route limits, and is Deriv legit for licences and synthetic indices.
MTN and Airtel accept USD 5 to USD 150 on deposits and USD 5 to USD 750 on withdrawals, also instant. Vodafone accepts sums up to USD 1,000, with withdrawals taking a working day.
Orange Money starts at USD 6 and Moov at USD 5. Cards start at USD 10, with withdrawals taking a working day, and Neteller runs instantly from USD 10. That list contains 72 method and currency combinations in all.
Routes appear without a country split, so the deposit screen in your account has the final word. Readers in Kenya and Ghana will find the most useful rails here.
Deriv P2P for local currency
Deriv P2P lets you swap local money with other traders for account credit, up to USD 10,000 per day, with a maximum of 1 hour shown for deposits and withdrawals.
It helps where cards fail or banks limit offshore payments, which is common for traders in Nigeria. You pay another person directly and the app releases the funds.
Peer-to-peer exchange has its own risks, because you deal with a stranger's account. Use only the app's flow, keep records of every payment, and stay inside the app for every message.
Banks in some countries also watch for this kind of transfer. Read the legal notes on your country page before you try it, and start with a small amount.

What are Derived Indices?
Derived Indices are Deriv's own product family. They are synthetic prices generated by an algorithm, and they trade 24/7 because no outside market needs to be open. Traders in Africa often like them for weekend access, when forex is closed. No other broker on our site offers the same product.
Their value has no link to real-world companies or currencies, so news and fundamentals will not help you. The volatility is built into the design, and it can clear a small balance fast.
Many beginners treat these as a game, and that is the mistake to avoid. Practise on the free demo first, and treat each trade with the same stop-loss discipline as a forex position.

Is Deriv regulated? Its offshore licences
Deriv publishes its group companies on its regulatory page. Deriv (BVI) Ltd holds a British Virgin Islands licence, Deriv Investments (Cayman) Limited answers to the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, Deriv (Mauritius) Ltd holds an Investment Dealer licence in Mauritius, Deriv (V) Ltd sits in Vanuatu, and Deriv (FX) Ltd sits in Labuan, Malaysia.
All are offshore, and none is in Africa outside Mauritius. Compared with Exness and HFM, which hold Kenyan and South African licences, Deriv gives you a weaker local complaint route.
It does advertise zero-balance protection, which means you will not lose more than you deposit on its CFDs. Mobile money convenience comes at the cost of that thinner oversight, so keep balances modest.

Deriv MT5, cTrader and TradingView
Deriv offers commission-free CFDs on three outside platforms. Deriv MT5 has 21 time frames and 38 indicators, and Deriv cTrader has 54 time frames, 70 indicators and in-built copy trading. TradingView brings more than 400 indicators and over 50 time frames. All three connect to the same family of accounts.
Deriv Trader and Deriv Bot add house options, including a way to build simple automated strategies without code. New traders can use a free demo on any of them. Compare the MT5 setup on our MT5 broker list, and use cTrader Copy if you want to follow other traders within this account.
Deriv Standard, Swap-Free and Zero Spread accounts
Deriv describes three CFD account types: Standard, swap-free and zero spread. All are marketed as commission-free, with leverage up to 1:1000. We can read no average EUR/USD spread on Deriv's site, so we cannot give you a cost per lot here.
That is a real gap against the brokers with measured data. Open a demo, record the EUR/USD spread during the London session for a few days, and multiply by USD 10 per pip to compare it with low spread brokers.
A 1:1000 cap means a very small margin, so run your position through the margin calculator before trading.
Deriv against the other three
Deriv wins on payment access in Africa, and it loses on regulation. Exness and HFM hold local licences in Kenya and South Africa, and XM has a course path and live rooms. Deriv is the only one with Derived Indices, and its P2P route helps when banks block a payment.
The pairs below show every measured figure side by side. Where Deriv's data is missing, we leave out that row and let the numbers we have do the work.
Who should use Deriv
Deriv works best, in this Deriv review, for traders in Kenya, Ghana and nearby countries who want mobile money in and out, and who keep balances small. Its weekend Derived Indices also draw traders who cannot watch weekday markets, provided they respect the risk.
Traders who rank regulation first should choose differently, and anyone in a country with local licensing should compare that local option first. Larger balances belong with stronger regulators. The forex brokers comparison lists those options, and our country pages explain the rules in your market.
Where Deriv is strong
- M-Pesa, MTN and Airtel deposits from USD 5
- M-Pesa withdrawals shown as instant on its payment table
- Derived Indices trade 24/7
- Deriv P2P exchanges funds in your local currency
- MT5, cTrader, TradingView, Deriv Trader and Deriv Bot
Where it falls short
- Licences only from BVI, Cayman, Mauritius, Vanuatu and Labuan
- Card deposits start at USD 10
- Payment routes are listed globally, with no country split
- Published spread data is thin, so cost is hard to compare
Deriv questions from African traders
Can I deposit on Deriv with M-Pesa?
Yes. Deriv's payment table lists M-Pesa with a USD 1,000 ceiling, with instant deposits and withdrawals. Routes carry no country split, so confirm M-Pesa appears on the deposit screen in your account.
Is Deriv regulated?
Yes, by offshore regulators. Its companies hold licences in the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Mauritius, Vanuatu and Labuan. None comes from Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana or South Africa, so your complaint route runs through those offshore bodies.
What is the minimum deposit at Deriv?
It depends on your route. M-Pesa, MTN, Airtel and Vodafone start at USD 5, Orange Money at USD 6, and cards and Neteller at USD 10. Your broker account has no separate minimum on those published figures.
Are Derived Indices real markets?
No. They are synthetic prices generated by Deriv's algorithm, and they trade 24/7. News and company results have no effect on them, and their built-in volatility can clear a small balance quickly, so practise on the demo first.
How much leverage does Deriv offer?
Deriv advertises leverage up to 1:1000 on its CFD accounts, along with zero-balance protection. That level means a tiny margin holds a large position, so a small move against you can close it. Keep your position sizes modest.
