Best forex brokers for beginners, compared on lessons and low entry

The best forex brokers for beginners combine real lessons, a free demo and a small first deposit, and they should leave you free to learn at your own pace. We compare XM, HFM, AvaTrade, Plus500, eToro, XTB, FOREX.com and OANDA on those points. Between 61% and 75% of retail CFD accounts at these brokers lose money.

Updated . Figures come from broker pages and published pricing data.

Beginner brokers compared

Each broker here has a free demo account and at least one strong reason to suit a first-time trader. Rows show entry cost and EUR/USD cost, though both matter less at the start than learning to place a stop loss. The first names combine low entry with a real path for learning.

Independent reviews keep naming AvaTrade, Plus500, XTB, OANDA and FXCM for new traders, and XM for education. We have weighted the list towards low entry because most readers here start with a small balance. Filters reorder the list if entry or cost matters most to you.

Entry cost, spreads and licences side by side

This table sets entry cost beside trading cost and the licence list. HFM lists USD 0 on three accounts, XM lists USD 5, and eToro ranges from USD 50 to USD 10,000 depending on your country. Check your own figure at sign-up. Trading costs differ across the group, and that gap rarely matters on 0.01 lots.

Licences matter more over time. AvaTrade and HFM hold CMA licences in Kenya, and HFM and AvaTrade also appear on South Africa's FSCA register. Residents elsewhere will sit offshore at most of these firms. Reading the company name on your agreement is one of the first good habits to build.

Our picks for beginners

Each pick shows its main reason to suit a new trader, and the point to watch. None of them will make trading easy, and the numbers on loss rates apply to all of them. Use the demo for at least a month before you put in real money.

XM logo

XM

MinimumUSD 5

XM leads on education, with live trading rooms running nearly around the clock and Tradepedia tracking your progress. A USD 5 listed entry keeps the first step cheap. Open Ultra Low at 1.1 pips, and watch the USD 10 monthly fee after 90 dormant days.

HFM logo

HFM

MinimumUSD 0

HFM's Cent account has no broker minimum, so mistakes cost very little while you learn. Copy trading sits in its app, and FxStreet news helps you follow the market. It holds CMA licence 155 and FSP 46632. Avoid its InfinityX account, which advertises unlimited leverage.

AvaTrade logo

AvaTrade

MinimumUSD 100

AvaTrade teaches through structured courses, quizzes and progress tracking, plus a Guardian Angel plugin that sends feedback on your trades. It holds CMA licence 262. A USD 100 minimum is higher than most here, and spreads near 0.93 pips cost more than raw accounts.

Plus500 logo

Plus500

MinimumEUR 50

Plus500's web platform is the easiest to learn on this shortlist, with a free demo and consistent charts across devices. +Insights shows what others are trading, and a publicly traded parent adds comfort. Spreads near 1.3 pips make frequent trading costly, and lessons themselves are limited, so add outside courses.

eToro logo

eToro

MinimumUSD 50+

eToro suits beginners who want to copy others and also hold stocks and crypto in one app. It reports a 61% retail loss figure, the lowest we list. EUR/USD runs near 1 pip. You can only set stop-losses after opening a trade, and its minimum depends on your country.

XTB logo

XTB

MinimumUSD 0

XTB's xStation 5 explains features in context with built-in tutorials, which helps new traders find their feet. The mobile app lets you set stops before you trade, and USD 0 removes any floor. An inactivity fee applies, and there is no MetaTrader if you outgrow its platform.

FOREX.com logo

FOREX.com

MinimumUSD 100

FOREX.com's Trading Academy has some of the most detailed interactive courses we have seen, and StoneX, its listed parent, adds strength. USD 100 opens an account, and spreads near 1.0 pip outside the US are fair. Copy trading is absent, and some advanced tools take time to learn.

OANDA logo

OANDA

MinimumUSD 0

OANDA earned top marks for new traders and mobile apps in 2026, helped by a friendly app and daily MarketPulse research. USD 0 removes the entry barrier. Spreads near 1.68 pips are the catch, so practise on small sizes and treat those costs as part of your training.

What a beginner should do first

Open a demo and spend at least 4 weeks on it. Learn to place a market order, set a stop loss, and read your margin level.

A new trader's first mistake is usually a position that is too large, and a demo lets you make that mistake for free. Keep a simple journal from the first day.

Then go live with the smallest sum you can afford to lose, at 0.01 lots. Each EUR/USD pip is worth USD 0.10 at that size, so a 20-pip stop risks USD 2. Our lot size calculator gives that number for any balance. Real money feels different, and you need that lesson at low cost.

The best forex brokers for beginners all let you repeat that first month as often as you like.

Lots, pips and leverage in plain words

A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency, a mini lot is 10,000, and a micro lot is 1,000. A pip is the fourth decimal on most pairs, so a move from 1.1000 to 1.1001 is one pip. On one micro lot of EUR/USD, one pip is worth about USD 0.10.

Leverage lets you control more than you deposit. At 1:100, USD 11 holds about USD 1,100 of EUR/USD. Pip value stays the same, so it only tempts you into larger positions. Set your account to 1:100 or lower at the start. Our guide to high leverage shows why.

Common beginner mistakes to avoid

Most early accounts die in three ways: trades without stops, positions sized for hope and not risk, and adding to a losing trade.

Risking more than 1% to 2% on one trade makes a losing streak hard to survive. A run of 10 losses at 2% costs about 18% of your balance, and at 10% it costs about 65%.

Avoid bonus offers until you understand their conditions, and never pay anyone for signals or a guaranteed-return account manager. Social media is full of fake results. Check any firm on the regulator's list in your country, such as those in our Kenya and Ghana guides, before you send any money.

What your first year will really cost

On 0.01 lots, spreads are small: 1.1 pips costs USD 0.11 per trade, or USD 22 across 200 trades. Conversion and payment fees can easily cost more, since a 3% gap on USD 200 in and out is USD 12. Then come your losses, which most beginners should treat as tuition.

Plan to lose your first deposit, and keep it small enough that this does no harm. If you still enjoy the process after a year and your journal shows progress, raise your size slowly. Compare options again on our forex broker comparison, since your needs at that point will look quite different.

Questions from new traders

Which forex broker is best for beginners?

XM has strong live teaching from USD 5, HFM has a no-minimum Cent account, and AvaTrade has structured courses. Your country matters too, since AvaTrade and HFM hold CMA licences in Kenya. Try two on demo before you decide.

How much money do I need to start forex?

A realistic start is USD 50 to USD 200, traded at 0.01 lots. Some brokers accept far less, and that barely covers a single position. Only deposit money you can afford to lose, because most retail accounts lose it.

Can I learn forex on a demo account?

Yes, and every broker here offers one for free. Spend at least a month learning orders, stops and margin. Demo fills are cleaner than real ones and you will feel no fear there, so follow it with small live trades.

What is the safest forex broker for a beginner?

Look for a licence you can check in your own country. In Kenya, HFM and AvaTrade hold CMA licences, and in South Africa, Exness and HFM hold FSP numbers. Elsewhere, compare the offshore licences and keep your balance small.

How long does it take to learn forex?

Most people need well over a year to trade with any consistency, and many never reach it. Keep a journal and judge yourself on following your plan, and expect no income from a small account during that time.

Is forex trading good for beginners with little money?

It is a costly way to try to get rich, because small balances invite oversized positions. Treat a small account as paid training. Most retail CFD accounts lose money, so keep your savings and your trading funds well apart.
