Best forex brokers in South Africa and how to check FSCA authorisation

The best forex brokers in South Africa pass two checks that many traders miss: an FSP number and, for firms issuing CFDs, a separate over-the-counter derivative provider authorisation. We compare Exness, HFM, AvaTrade, IG, IUX and Vantage on those FSCA links, and add XM and Deriv for entry cost and payment routes.

Updated . Checked against regulator sites, broker pages and local press.

FSCA-linked and offshore brokers compared

The best forex brokers in South Africa answer to a real local regulator, and several global brands operate companies under it. Each row shows entry cost and the cost of trading EUR/USD. The order is an editorial choice, weighing FSCA links first, then cost and access. Filters reorder the list by one measure.

Sponsored links open the broker's own site. Check that you land on the South African entity where one exists, because a global homepage may open your account with an offshore company instead. A local company name on your agreement is the single detail that decides which regulator can help you.

Rand entry costs and spreads side by side

This table puts the deciding numbers in one view. The minimum is the broker's listed dollar floor, and USD 10 converts to about R170 at today's mid-market rate. EUR/USD cost is the all-in figure on a raw account where we have one, or the average spread on a spread-only account.

Multiply any cost by USD 10 for a standard lot, then convert. An 0.8-pip cost comes to USD 8, about R130. USD/ZAR behaves differently from EUR/USD, with wider spreads and larger daily moves, so read the live quote on the rand pair before you size a position, because these figures only describe EUR/USD.

FSCA regulated forex brokers and the ODP licence

FSCA regulated forex brokers normally show a Financial Services Provider number, and that number alone does not complete the check.

A firm that issues CFDs as principal also needs authorisation as an over-the-counter derivative provider, or ODP, under the Financial Markets Act. The FSCA has reminded the public that a FAIS licence alone does not allow it.

Exness ZA (PTY) Ltd holds FSP 51024, and Exness says its ODP authorisation sits with Exness (SC) Ltd. HF Markets SA (PTY) Ltd holds FSP 46632. AvaTrade operates under FSP 45984, and published data records FSCA links for IG, IUX, Vantage and Libertex, whose numbers we have not independently confirmed.

To verify a broker, search the number on the FSCA's FSP search, confirm the legal name matches your agreement, and ask which company issues the CFDs you will trade. The regulator also publishes warnings against named platforms, and any name on that list should end the conversation.

How each broker fits a South African account

We weigh the best forex brokers in South Africa with one reason to choose each and one to hesitate. FSCA links come first, because a local complaint route is the most useful protection you can get. Payment rails such as Ozow or instant EFT rarely appear in broker documents, so see the deposit screen after sign-up.

Exness logo

Exness

MinimumBy region

Exness ZA holds FSP 51024, and Exness quotes from 0 pips on Raw Spread and Zero accounts. It says over 98% of withdrawals run automatically. Its CFD issuer sits in Seychelles under the ODP arrangement it describes, so read which company your contract names and what that means for you.

HFM logo

HFM

MinimumUSD 0

HF Markets SA holds FSP 46632, and HFM has no broker minimum on Cent, Zero and Premium accounts, so it suits a small rand balance. Its international account list does not show rand, so ask the South African entity which account currencies it offers before you assume a ZAR account.

XM logo

XM

MinimumUSD 5

XM lists a USD 5 minimum, about R83 today, and its live trading rooms and tracked courses suit a learner. We cannot confirm a South African licence for XM, so your cover sits offshore. Choose Ultra Low at 1.1 pips, since Standard averages 2.0 pips on EUR/USD.

Deriv logo

Deriv

MinimumUSD 5

Deriv holds only offshore licences, so South African clients have no local regulator behind them. It lists cards from USD 10, and Deriv P2P exchanges funds in local currency. Its Derived Indices trade all weekend, though traders with an FSCA-licensed option should look at those first.

AvaTrade logo

AvaTrade

MinimumUSD 100

AvaTrade's South African licence is FSP 45984, and its structured courses are among the best we have seen for beginners. Copy trading runs through AvaSocial and DupliTrade. A USD 100 minimum and spreads near 0.93 pips mean active traders will pay more than on a raw account.

IG logo

IG

MinimumGBP 1

IG holds an FSCA link along with 8 Tier-1 licences, a stock market listing and a regulated bank, a safety record few brokers match. EUR/USD averages about 0.91 pips, and its mobile charts are excellent. It has no copy trading and no swap-free account, which rules it out for some traders.

IUX logo

IUX

MinimumUSD 50

IUX lists a South African licence and costs about 0.6 pips all-in on its Raw account, with a USD 50 entry on Standard. It only offers about 152 symbols, so it suits a trader focused on majors and gold. It is young, so history is thin compared with the older names here.

Vantage logo

Vantage

MinimumUSD 50

Vantage holds a Tier-2 FSCA licence in the published data, and its Raw ECN account costs about 0.72 pips all-in from USD 50. Copy trading sits inside its app, though its statistics hide losing providers. Search the register for the exact company it would use for your account.

Rand deposits, ZAR accounts and pip values

Rand deposits depend on the entity and on the routes your client area shows. HF Markets SA and Exness ZA both operate South African companies with local websites, and those sites are the right place to ask about ZAR accounts. A global account list will not always apply to you.

Account currency matters more than it looks. If you fund in rand and your account is in dollars, you pay a conversion spread on the way in and again on the way out.

One pip on a standard lot of EUR/USD is USD 10, about R170 today, so our pip calculator lets you select ZAR and see the exact amount.

A ZAR account removes that conversion cost, but it raises another question: your profits and losses move with the rand. Compare the broker's rate with the live mid-market figure before you decide, because a 2% gap on R10,000 costs R200 before you place any trade.

Trading with R100 or R20: minimum deposits in rand

Trading with a hundred rand is possible at HFM on paper, since Cent, Zero and Premium list no broker minimum.

Opening an XM account takes a listed USD 5, about R83 today, and Deriv's card route starts at USD 10, about R170. Exness says its minimum changes by region and payment method, and published reviews list USD 100.

R20 falls below most published payment floors, so treat it as a test of the route, not a trading balance. That first sum will not hold a normal position with a stop for long. A realistic start is R2,000 to R5,000 if you plan to trade 0.01 lots and follow a risk rule.

The lot size calculator shows what a small balance can carry. Use it before your first trade, because the smallest deposit is rarely the balance a risk rule supports.

Low spread forex brokers for South African traders

Low spread forex brokers for South African traders are mostly raw accounts with a commission. IUX Raw costs about 0.6 pips all-in on EUR/USD and Vantage Raw ECN about 0.72 pips. Exness Raw Spread quotes from 0 pips with up to USD 3.50 per side, and HFM Zero came to about 1.1 pips in published data.

The London and New York overlap, 15:00–19:00 Johannesburg time, is usually the busiest period for major pairs, so spreads tend to be tightest then. At 30 lots a month, the gap between 0.6 and 1.1 pips is USD 150, about R2,500. The low spread forex brokers list compares more accounts.

Exchange control and the R2 million allowance

South African residents can move up to R2 million per calendar year under the single discretionary allowance, doubled from R1 million in the 2026 Budget. It needs no SARS tax clearance, and the South African Reserve Bank confirmed the change by circular in April 2026. Unused amounts do not carry over into the next year.

A further foreign investment allowance covers up to R10 million a year, with SARS approval of the international transfer. Your bank or an authorised dealer can confirm how these limits apply to a broker transfer.

Enforcement is tightening, and settlement amounts for breaches can run from 10% to 40% of the sum involved, so keep your transfer records.

A local FSCA-regulated entity holding your funds in South Africa raises different questions from an offshore account. Ask your broker where your money sits, then ask your bank how to treat it.

Do forex traders pay SARS?

South African residents should expect trading profits to be relevant to SARS. Whether a gain counts as income or capital depends on your pattern of trading, and frequent short-term trading points towards income. A registered tax practitioner can tell you which treatment applies to your own case.

Declaring profits falls to you, since brokers generally leave that to the client and send no return to SARS on your behalf.

Download annual statements from the client area, and convert profits into rand if the account is in another currency. Keep those records with your exchange control paperwork, because the SARS view of your income and your transfer history should agree.

What a forex trade costs in rand

Rand accounts make the sums easier to follow, and a USD account needs conversion on every deposit. One pip on 0.01 lots of EUR/USD is worth about USD 0.10, which is about R2 today.

A 25-pip stop at that size risks about R42, so a R500 balance would risk far more than 1% on that trade. A balance near R4,170 makes that stop fit a 1% limit.

Capitec, FNB and other local banks can charge their own fees on international transfers, so compare with a local EFT route where your broker offers one. Our lot size calculator lets you set the account currency before sizing a position.

Johannesburg trading hours for forex

Johannesburg sits at UTC+2 with no daylight-saving change, close to London time. The London open comes in mid-morning, and the overlap with New York runs through the afternoon and early evening. Rand pairs tend to be most active during European and early US hours.

The table shows standard-time hours, and London and New York move an hour earlier in Johannesburg during their daylight-saving periods. The market hours tool shows the live state in your own time zone. Sydney and Tokyo fall overnight, so most South African traders can ignore them.

How to start forex trading in South Africa

These steps put the FSCA check first, since moving a live account later is a hassle. Compare the regulator's approach with Kenya's on our Kenya guide if you are curious. Our main forex broker table covers brands beyond this shortlist.

  1. Search the FSP number on the FSCA site and match the legal name.
  2. Ask which company issues the CFDs, since an FSP number and an ODP can differ.
  3. Prepare your ID and proof of residence before funding.
  4. Confirm exchange control limits with your bank for any offshore transfer.
  5. Size trades with a calculator, and start with 0.01 lots.
  6. Download statements each tax year, and keep them with your transfer records.

What traders in South Africa ask

Which forex brokers are FSCA regulated?

Among brokers here, Exness ZA holds FSP 51024, HF Markets SA holds FSP 46632, and An independent trust scale gives AvaTrade FSP 45984. It also records FSCA links for IG, IUX and Vantage. Confirm every name on the FSCA's own search before you deposit.

Is forex trading legal in South Africa?

Yes, and the FSCA supervises the firms offering it. Residents can move up to R2 million a year under the single discretionary allowance, plus up to R10 million with a SARS approval of international transfer.

Which broker lets me start with a small rand balance?

HFM lists no broker minimum on Cent, Zero and Premium accounts, and XM lists USD 5, about R83 today. Your payment route sets its own floor, and a balance that small leaves very little margin room.

Which broker allows you to trade with R20?

R20 falls below most published payment floors. HFM's no-minimum accounts are the only candidates here, and your payment route decides whether the deposit clears. Treat that sum as a route test, since you cannot trade with it for long.

Do forex traders pay SARS?

Expect trading profits to matter to SARS. Whether a gain counts as income or capital depends on your pattern of trading, so ask a registered tax practitioner, and keep annual statements in rand with your transfer records.

Which broker is best for a ZAR account?

Ask the South African entities directly which currencies they offer. Exness ZA and HF Markets SA both hold FSCA numbers, and HFM's international account list does not show rand, so their local sites are the right place to confirm.
