Best forex brokers in Kenya: CMA licensees and M-Pesa deposits

The best forex brokers in Kenya start with one test, a licence from the Capital Markets Authority that you can look up yourself. We rank Exness, HFM, Pepperstone, FP Markets, IC Markets and AvaTrade on that test, then add Deriv and XM for their mobile money and low entry.

CMA licensees and offshore brokers for Kenya compared

Kenya has one of the clearest setups in Africa, because several of the best forex brokers in Kenya here hold a licence from the regulator in Nairobi. Each row shows entry cost and the cost of trading EUR/USD. The order is an editorial choice that puts a CMA licence first, then M-Pesa access, then price.

Use the filters to reorder by one measure at a time. Sponsored links open the broker's own site. Before you click through, note the legal company name in the licence table further down, because you will want to see that same name on your account agreement. A brand name on its own proves nothing.

Minimum deposit, spreads and leverage side by side

This table puts the numbers that decide most choices in one view. EUR/USD cost shows the all-in figure on a raw account where we have one, or the spread on a spread-only account.

Multiply any figure by USD 10 to get the cost per standard lot, so 0.8 pips comes to USD 8, about KSh 1,040 today.

Leverage caps come from the brokers' international pages, and a Kenyan entity can apply its own limit.

Ask the Kenyan company for its cap before you plan a position, and treat any figure above 1:400 with suspicion on a small account. The minimum shown is the broker's listed floor, and M-Pesa carries its own limits on top.

CMA licensed forex brokers and how to check the register

CMA licensed forex brokers hold one of three licence types under the Capital Markets (Online Foreign Exchange Trading) Regulations 2017: dealing broker, non-dealing broker or money manager.

A dealing broker trades against clients as a market maker, and it must hold KSh 50 million in paid-up capital. A non-dealing broker passes orders to the market and must hold KSh 30 million.

The CMA's online forex list shows Exness (KE) Limited under licence 162, HFM Investments Ltd under 155, Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited under 128, FP Markets Limited under 193, IC Markets (KE) Limited under 199 and Ava Trade Kenya Limited under 262. EGM Securities, trading as FXPesa, holds licence 107.

Search the legal company name on that list, then match the number to the footer of the broker's site. A brand showing only a Seychelles or Mauritius licence serves you from abroad, and the CMA cannot help you with it. Deriv and XM fall into that second group.

Who each broker suits in Kenya

Each entry here gives one specific reason to choose that broker, and one reason to hesitate. We have listed the CMA licence first where one exists, because a local regulator matters most on the day a withdrawal stalls. Read the full profile before you decide.

Exness logo

Exness

MinimumBy region

Exness is the natural first look, with CMA licence 162 and M-Pesa promoted on its Kenyan pages. It quotes from 0 pips on Raw Spread and Zero, and it says over 98% of withdrawals run automatically. Its minimum changes by region, and published reviews list USD 100, so confirm your own figure at sign-up.

HFM logo

HFM

MinimumUSD 0

HFM holds CMA licence 155 and sets no broker minimum on Cent, Zero and Premium accounts, so it is the cheapest licensed way to begin. Its copy trading app is live for new users. Business terms restrict scalping and AI-assisted strategies, and that rules it out for some system traders.

Pepperstone logo

Pepperstone

MinimumUSD 10

Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited holds licence 128, and its Razor account costs about 0.8 pips all-in on EUR/USD. USD 10 opens an account, and you can choose MT4, MT5, cTrader or TradingView. M-Pesa rails did not appear in the data we can read, so plan on a card first.

FP Markets logo

FP Markets

MinimumUSD 0

FP Markets Limited holds licence 193, and its Raw ECN account costs about 0.9 pips all-in on MetaTrader. Review data lists a USD 0 minimum. Its 10,000 share CFDs sit on a separate Iress platform with extra fees, so most Kenyan forex traders will stay on MT5.

IC Markets logo

IC Markets

MinimumUSD 200

IC Markets (KE) Limited holds licence 199, and Raw Spread comes to 0.72 pips all-in, the lowest figure among Kenyan licensees here. It suits coders and scalpers, thanks to free VPS hosting. A USD 200 minimum and an inactivity fee make it a poor choice for a first small account.

AvaTrade logo

AvaTrade

MinimumUSD 100

Ava Trade Kenya Limited holds licence 262, and AvaTrade's structured courses suit beginners better than any other Kenyan licensee here. Copy trading runs through AvaSocial and DupliTrade. Spreads near 0.93 pips cost more than raw accounts, and USD 100 is a higher floor than Pepperstone's.

Deriv logo

Deriv

MinimumUSD 5

Deriv has no Kenyan licence, so complaints go to an offshore regulator. It earns a place for M-Pesa from USD 5 to USD 1,000, with instant deposits and withdrawals on its payment table. Keep balances modest here, and treat its Derived Indices as a very different product from forex.

XM logo

XM

MinimumUSD 5

XM has no Kenyan licence that we can confirm, and most African residents sit with an offshore arm. It lists a USD 5 minimum, and its live trading rooms and tracked courses help a new trader learn. Open Ultra Low, because Standard averages 2.0 pips on EUR/USD.

Forex brokers that accept M-Pesa in Kenya

Forex brokers accepting M-Pesa in Kenya include Exness, which promotes it on its Kenyan pages, and Deriv, whose table lists M-Pesa from USD 5 to USD 1,000, or about KSh 650 to KSh 129,900 today.

Those two are the only ones we can confirm from the broker's own material. Other brokers can add rails locally, so check the deposit screen after you register.

Press and guide sites report M-Pesa limits of about KSh 250,000 per transaction and KSh 500,000 per day. A larger withdrawal then needs splitting across days or sending to a bank, so read Safaricom's current tariff first. Those limits belong to Safaricom, and a broker cannot change them.

The exchange rate is where the real cost hides. Note the shillings charged for USD 100, then compare that with the mid-market figure in our currency converter.

A gap of 2% costs you the same as 20 pips on a micro-lot trade, and it hits you on the way in and again on the way out.

Minimum deposit for Kenyan traders, in shillings

The minimum deposit for Kenyan traders depends on the account and the payment route. HFM lists no broker minimum on three accounts, Deriv's M-Pesa route starts at USD 5, XM lists USD 5, and Pepperstone lists USD 10, about KSh 1,300. AvaTrade asks for USD 100, about KSh 13,000, and IC Markets for USD 200.

A workable first balance is higher than any minimum. With USD 100 and a 1% risk rule, you can lose USD 1 per trade.

On a 20-pip stop that means a position of 0.005 lots, which many accounts round to 0.01 lots, so even USD 100 is tight. Our lot size calculator runs that sum for any balance and stop distance.

Starting with KSh 1,000 lets you learn the platform and little more, as opening an Exness account or an HFM Cent account will show you.

Treat it as tuition, and expect no income from it. Practising on a demo costs nothing and teaches the same order-entry skills, so a sensible path is a month on demo followed by a small real deposit.

Low spread forex brokers for Kenyan traders

Low spread forex brokers for Kenyan traders usually move the cost into a commission. IC Markets costs about 0.72 pips all-in, Pepperstone about 0.8 pips and FP Markets about 0.9 pips, and all three hold a CMA licence.

Exness Raw Spread quotes from 0 pips and charges up to USD 3.50 per side, so its total is close to those.

On one standard lot, the gap between 0.72 and 0.93 pips is about USD 2. At 50 lots a month, that is USD 105, about KSh 13,600. Spread-only accounts suit traders who place only a few positions a month and prefer one simple number. See the low spread forex brokers shortlist for wider comparisons.

All of these figures widen when liquidity thins. The London and New York overlap, 16:00–20:00 Nairobi time, is usually the busiest part of the day for EUR/USD, so spreads tend to be tightest then.

Fast withdrawal from forex brokers to M-Pesa

A fast withdrawal to M-Pesa depends on two clocks: the broker's approval and the payment rail. Deriv's table shows M-Pesa withdrawals as instant, and Exness says over 98% of its withdrawals are processed automatically. A first withdrawal takes longer at most brokers because identity checks must finish before money moves.

Complete verification before you deposit, so later requests are not held up. Keep screenshots of each request and every M-Pesa confirmation. With a CMA licensee, you can take that evidence to the regulator in Nairobi. An offshore entity leaves you with its foreign regulator, and that usually means email and long waits.

Test the full loop early. Deposit USD 20, trade a little, then withdraw USD 10. That small test tells you more about a broker than any review on this site. Brokers commonly send money back through the channel you paid in with, so choose your first route with care.

Forex scams in Kenya and how to spot them

Kenyan regulators have warned the public about unlicensed dealers, and the same patterns keep returning. Watch for "account managers" who trade for you, Telegram groups selling signals, and promises of fixed weekly returns.

A real broker takes deposits through its client area and a named payment partner. Sending KSh 5,000 to a personal M-Pesa line to "activate" an account is a clear warning sign.

Check any firm against the CMA's list before you pay, and report suspicious schemes to the regulator. If you did send money by M-Pesa, contact Safaricom quickly, as a fast report offers the best chance of a reversal. Our mobile money guide has more on safe funding.

Forex market hours in Nairobi

Nairobi sits at UTC+3 with no daylight-saving change, which suits forex well. London opens in the late morning, and the busiest overlap with New York runs through the afternoon and early evening, so you can trade the most liquid hours after a working day. The Sydney and Tokyo sessions fall overnight.

These are standard-time hours. London and New York move an hour earlier in Nairobi during their daylight-saving periods, roughly March to October. The market hours tool shows the live state in your own time zone. Avoid the 15 minutes around major US data releases until you have some experience, because spreads jump at those moments.

How to start forex trading in Kenya with a licensed broker

Opening an account with the best forex brokers in Kenya takes these steps, and the licence check comes first because it is the hardest thing to fix later.

They take about an hour, plus the time a broker needs to approve your documents. Our main forex broker comparison covers the same brokers across all markets if you want a wider view.

  1. Shortlist brokers on the CMA list, then compare their account types and costs.
  2. Open the account, choose the currency, and note the legal company named in your agreement.
  3. Upload your ID and proof of address before funding, so a first withdrawal is not delayed.
  4. Fund through the route your client area shows, and keep the confirmation message.
  5. Size each trade with a calculator and keep risk per trade near 1% of your balance.
  6. Withdraw a small amount early to prove the route works before you add more money.

What Kenyan traders ask

Which forex brokers are registered with the CMA in Kenya?

The regulator's list of online forex firms includes Exness (KE) Limited, HFM Investments Ltd, EGM Securities (FXPesa), Pepperstone Markets Kenya, FP Markets Limited, IC Markets (KE) Limited and Ava Trade Kenya. Check the live list before you open an account, since names can change.

Is FXPesa a good broker?

FXPesa is the trading name of EGM Securities, which appears on the CMA's register with licence 107. That confirms its licence but says nothing about its pricing, and we have not included it in the comparison above for lack of data.

What is the cheapest forex broker in Kenya?

Among CMA licensees here, IC Markets is cheapest on EUR/USD at about 0.72 pips all-in, followed by Pepperstone at about 0.8 pips. Its USD 200 minimum is high, so a small account will often prefer Pepperstone at USD 10.

Can I start forex trading in Kenya with KSh 1,000?

HFM lists no broker minimum on three accounts, and Deriv's M-Pesa route starts at USD 5, about KSh 650 today. KSh 1,000 can open an account, but treat that balance as a way to learn the platform.

How long do forex withdrawals to M-Pesa take?

Deriv's table shows M-Pesa withdrawals as instant, and Exness says over 98% of withdrawals run automatically. A first withdrawal takes longer while identity checks finish, so complete verification before you make your first deposit.

What leverage do Kenyan forex brokers offer?

HFM's international table lists up to 1:2000, Exness lists an unlimited setting on international accounts, and Deriv lists up to 1:1000. The Kenyan entity can set a lower cap, so ask that company for its own figure before you trade.
